Collecting money and sponsoring a local family during the holidays with my classmates at The Rivers School.

In November 2024, I learned more about the Natick Service Council (NSC) and its mission to "connect, engage, and collaborate with the community to support Natick neighbors who are experiencing hardship or economic uncertainty by promoting self-sufficiency." A yearly tradition at the Rivers School is to partner with the NSC and sponsor a local family in need over the holidays. My class as a whole donated money to buy holiday gifts for the family, and specifically their children. I contributed $40 of my money and with $380 total, my classmates and I went shopping at Target. We bought a scooter, helmet, clothing, and toys for one girl in the family.
Overall, this was a great experience and felt good to use my own money to support a less fortunate family. It was also a chance to understand how expensive the holidays really are, and the fact that $380 doesn't go as far as my classmates and I thought it would, but we did the best we could. There are many ways to help at the Natick Service Council, and many other opportunities to contribute in your community both with monetary donations and donations of your time. So, what are you waiting for? The holidays are coming. Get out there, donate, and serve your community!
