In December of 2022 I volunteered at the Perkins School for the Blind during their annual holiday concert. The school is located in Watertown, Massachusetts and is the oldest school for the blind in the United States. The campus is massive, beautiful, and full of old brick buildings. I learned while I was there that many of the students are blind but also have other health problems.
There are many ways to volunteer at The Perkins School. I volunteered with my parents at the holiday concert that the school has in every December. The concert is made-up of performance from the students who sing and play instruments. What is amazing is that because the students can't see they need to memorize the music note for note. I was particularly enthused about the holiday songs played with bells. Our jobs as volunteers were to greet people coming to the concert including the people who came late. We handed out program and masks at the front door. We also guided blind people to their seats, and also helped them to the restroom when needed. When we had free time, we went to the museum that had a lot of history about blind people. This volunteer experience was very fun, i learned a lot and would highly recommend it.
